The growth of a low-carbon circular economy has been impeded in recent years by rising packaging usage and low rates of recycling and reuse. In response, the European Commission will be repealing the current Directive on Packaging & Packaging Waste 94/62/EC and will replace it with a new regulation requiring member states to reduce packaging waste by five per cent by 2030 and 15 per cent by 2040, compared to 2018 levels.

The European Commission (EC) has recently issued the first draft of the European sustainability reporting standards (ESRS) delegated act for public consultation.

This act supplements the Accounting Directive as amended by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, which requires large and also listed companies to publish regular reports on the social and environmental risks they face, and how their activities impact people and the environment.

Mental health is a pressing concern that touches each one of us, directly or indirectly. This year, Malta Enterprise as part of its CSR initiatives, has put together a memorable recital which saw the participation of two extraordinary artists violist Carmine Lauri and classical guitarist Simon Schembri to celebrate Richmond’s relentless efforts in raising mental health awareness, particularly within the workplace.

The European Defence Fund (EDF) promotes cooperation among companies and research actors of all sizes and covers all EU Member States and regions, in research and development of state-of-the-art and interoperable defence technology and equipment. The EDF supports competitive and collaborative projects throughout the entire cycle of research and development to leverage a bigger impact on the European defence capability and industrial landscape.

Malta Enterprise, in collaboration with the Ministry for Environment, Energy and Enterprise, the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA), and the Malta Business Bureau (MBB), held an online session to discuss with industry operators the impact of the proposed EU legislation on Packaging and Packaging of Waste.

Kurt Farrugia, CEO of Malta Enterprise, opened the session by emphasizing the importance of businesses familiarizing themselves with the provisions introduced under the draft regulation. He urged companies to prepare for the changes by understanding the new legislation.

The Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (EYE) programme, which is supported locally by Malta Enterprise, is a business exchange programme which helps both new and experienced entrepreneurs to scale up. Since 2009, EYE has helped entrepreneurs from all over Europe to exchange knowledge and expertise, and to expand their business and their professional network.

Malta Enterprise will be organising a debate: Europe’s single market at risk - the intensification of geopolitical tensions and their implications on small member states within the single market. This will also delve into the implications that EU regulations have on the bloc’s competitiveness.

Crane Currency has invested €1 million for the installation of a solar farm at its Malta security printing plant in Ħal Far. The adoption of solar energy is aimed to reduce the company’s’ carbon footprint. 

The European Commission has launched a consultation on a draft revision of the de minimis regulation.

Under the current rules, Member States can grant support of up to €200,000 per beneficiary over a period of three years (‘de minimis threshold’) without prior notification to the Commission for approval.

MGC Pharmaceuticals Ltd, which has a base in Malta, has seen very positive results from a clinical study for the white-label version of its ArtemiC™ Support to assess its impact on patients suffering from Long-COVID.

During the study 60 COVID-vaccinated patients suffering from Long-COVID were observed in clinics across Spain when administered the study product twice a day for six weeks.

The administered nutraceutical was shown to alleviate symptoms of Long-COVID unrelated to functional limitations, including pain, mental confusion, sleep disorders and inflammation.
